Louthus Romford

One of the most challenging projects the CH team has worked on was an assist on a block of apartments directly above a parade of shops, with the plant room above the stair well.

The district heating scheme providing low temperature hot water (LTHW) to he heat interface units in each flat is served by a Valliant Buffer, which is in turn served by a pair of Vaillant boilers. The primary pipework required modification from the boilers to the buffer vessel as there was not sufficient flow. The secondary pipework also required modifications to ensure we got the required flow rates. Tough stuff.

Our team managed to complete all the work in one day and with little disruption.

Our team managed to complete all the works with only one day of down time to the tenants and with little disruption.

Midsomer Norton

This Plant Room upgrade in Midsomer Norton required the removal of an old floor standing shell and tube boiler, which was fitted with a still-functional Nu-Way burner. We also removed a gas fired Andrews water heater and Stockvis Domestic hot water plate exchanger.

As you can see from the pictures below, it is extremely important to inspect flues during services as the inner wall of the flue had completely collapsed and was blocking the flue way.

These appliances served a Leisure Centre so we had to maintain services for the duration of the project. We fitted 4no Remeha boilers complete with frames, a low loss header and mixing pot, which then goes out to feed the system. The low temperature hot water system (LTHW) was installed in Geberit Low carbon steel Mapress and the gas was fitted in Stainless Steel. We also had to pipe up the new air handling unit which was replaced as the previous model had no heat recovery option.

Overall, this project was completed punctually with minimal ‘down time’ to the centre, which will soon see the benefits of a more energy efficient system.

BEFORE

Walthamstow SSL

The CH team was briefed to fit two new Hamworthy Wessex ModuMax mk3 boilers (alongside the existing Hamworthy boilers) in a recent Plant Room upgrade for a national supermarket Chain in Walthamstow.

Our welders had to fabricate a number of spool pieces to enable us to connect to the Imperial Table D flanges. We also had to fabricate a 6-inch header to which all 4 boilers then connected on to. The gas run on this installation was all carried out in 108mm Geberit Mapress Stainless and was slightly challenging as we had to run this on the underside of the first floor slab; the work was all carried out on a SkyJack SJ19, which greatly helped in reducing the installation time.

The heating coil that serves the shop floor air handling unit was also changed over during the course of the project and we’re happy with the final result.

Old Ship Hotel, Brighton

A small but interesting job was a project at the Old Ship Hotel in Brighton, whereby we  repaired a leak originating from a leaking 6-inch brazed fitting that was not repairable. Our Engineers fabricated and replaced a new section of customised pipe including two tees and Straub Couplings.

Our freeze team attended site and used liquid nitrogen to freeze the old, corroded pipework (due to the leak), which enabled us to replace it with brand new copper pipework.

We carried out the work during daytime hours to minimise the disruption to the hotel. The team is really proud to have been able to rectify the faults with no effect to the hotel’s business.

Below are some images to show what the project entailed and what our work looked like once we’d completed the repair.

Southside Shopping Centre, Wandsworth

Refurbishing the public toilets at Southside Shopping Centre in Wandsworth involved mechanical services, including validation of existing services, stripping out redundant services, new supply and extract ductwork. We also installed new extract twin fan units, diffusers, exhaust fans, Nu-Aire air handling units as well as supply and extract ductwork throughout.

Public Health Services provided validation of existing hot water cylinders and booster set, and installation of new domestic hot and cold water services from the incoming hot and cold water services feed using Yorkshire copper and end feed fittings.

Our experienced Engineers installed new gravity soil and waste pipework to connect to existing vent stacks. We used Geberit UPVC soil pipe and vent fittings. Lastly, we chlorinated water service pipework and tested all services.

The refurbishment is environmentally sustainable and was completed on time, within budget and within the latest Building Regulations L2B.

Major Supermarket, Pimlico

In October 2017, we were instructed to carry out works for a major supermarket based in Central London.

Our experienced engineers stripped out four boilers and replaced these with Ideal Tormax 100 boilers, as well as installing a Megaflo 500 litre commercial hot water cylinder.

We used materials including Gebrit Mapress pipe and fittings, as well as Grundfos twin head pumps, which are more reliable and energy-efficient.

Low carbon steel was used for the heating system, which is not only better for the environment but is proven to be a better product due to its corrosion resistance. Stainless steel was used on the gas supply. By using Ideal frame headers and the Gebrit system as opposed to traditional materials, the installation time was substantially improved.

Project Dragonfly

‘Project Dragonfly’ – the installation of all pipework in the fourth Ocado Customer Fulfilment centre, located in Erith – is the largest project that the team at CH Systems has worked on to date!

The Ocado warehouse sits on a circa 40 acre site close to the River Thames, and when complete will have 560,000 sq ft of distribution space with offices totalling 27,857 sq ft. It will also boast 72 dock and 16 level access doors as well as room for 326 cars and 287 HGVs!

Within the scope of the project, we carried out the following work:

  • Boiler and plant room pipework installation, including 2no Ideal Imax Xtra floor standing condensing boilers and 2no Andrews MAXXflo gas fired water heaters.
  • Within the plant room there was also 4no Air Handling Units which were fed off the heating circuit.
  • All of the heating pipework was installed in Low Carbon Steel Mapress all the way to 108mm OD in excess of 1200 meters.
  • All of the domestic pipework (over 2000 meters) was installed in Copper Mapress up to and including 54mm.
  • All the second fix of 60 toilets, 6 showers, numerous hand wash basins and 4 squatting toilets.
  • Over 450 meters of Geberit HDPE soil pipe was installed to serve all the waste outlets on site.

Once again, we received critical project support from our suppliers, including BSS and Smith Brothers Stores as well as Geberit who supplied all the pipe fittings across the project. We’re proud to have completed such a monumental project and we’d like to thank our team of fitters as well as the upstream management for their hard work to ensure this all ran smoothly.

139 Kensington High Street, W8

CH Systems recently completed a Plumbing, Heating & Ventilation installation in 9-apartment building in Kensington, London W8.

We installed a communal Scuba Tank (booster set) provided by Duty point to provide boosted mains water to each of the of 9 apartments. The apartments incorporate Nuaire extraction units for the kitchens/bathrooms & Ariston boilers/water heaters providing the heating and hot water throughout.

All the pipework, for the heating and domestic services, has been installed in Uponor PEx and all the soil and waste pipework has been installed in Geberit HDPE.

Using the aforementioned materials has allowed us a trouble-free, high quality installation, and enabled a plumbing, heating and ventilation system that can be trusted.

CH Systems use Geberit to rebuild the iconic Hastings Pier

The team at CH Systems opted to use Gebrerit Mapress and HDPE for the work we did on the £14m renovation of Hastings Pier, after seeing the benefits on Geberit’s free training.

Supermarket boiler upgrade

CH Systems recently assisted in a boiler upgrade for a national supermarket chain.

The works included disconnecting and stripping out three Chaffoteaux Flexiflame 420s that were no longer functional and beyond repair. The team installed three Ideal Evomax boilers in a Cascade; all the pipework was installed in Geberit Mapress low carbon steel, and the flue system was of a “flue dilution” type as this greatly increases options in terms of siting the replacement boilers.

Within the scope of the project, we also replaced a number of seized Crane gate valves, re-sited the Primary Grundfos pump, converted the heating system from open vent to a sealed system; incorporating a new Pressurisation unit and installation of an expansion vessel.
