New Gas Absorption Heat Pump range by Remeha Commercial

Commercial heating manufacturer and supplier Remeha Commercial recently announced the launch of a range of Gas Absorption Heat Pumps (GAHP), which are described by the company as perfect for space heating in commercial new build developments – either in conjunction with commercial condensing boilers or in cascade operations – as well as a great low-carbon alternative for space heating.

As the owner or developer of a commercial new-build (or of an existing property), you’ll be looking to cut costs but not at the expense of quality and capability. Remeha’s new range is a high efficiency, low-carbon, low-NOx alternative for low grade heating and hot water generation.

The GAHP range uses gas-fired heat pump technology and a low-NOx thermodynamic condensing heat generator to draw energy from the air, typically for low temperature hot water applications such as under-floor heating.

So, how does this translate in business terms?

When it’s cold (which happens a lot in England), natural gas performs better than electricity; it warms a room within minutes, and is thus cheaper and more effective long-term. By using gas rather than electricity to fire the heat pump, the Gas Absorption Heat Pumps are the cheaper option.

And here’s an FYI: natural gas is recognised as one of the most eco-friendly sources of energy available. It is the cleanest burning fuel available today, and because natural gas is so efficient, you end up lowering your overall energy usage, which leaves your home with a much smaller carbon footprint.

The GAHP range has been described by Mark Northcott, Managing Director of Remeha Commercial, as one of the best means of harnessing renewable energy for heating. But not to worry if you’re using a liquid-petroleum-gas operation (a more costly fuel variant); Remeha’s GAHP range is suitable for LPG as well as natural gas.

Depending on the scale of the new-build, the Remeha GAHP range is available as a single unit or in cascade operations of up to 48 units. It comes in two versions: a high temperature optimised and a low temperature optimised version for distribution systems. And if you’re looking to save space in your building, the GAHP comes in a weatherproof steel casing for outdoor installations.

The pumps have been hailed as easy to use and easy to install.

Bosch to expand range with Industrial Steam Boiler – new to the UK

Technology giant Bosch has announced plans to expand its industrial boiler portfolio with the launch of a range of steam boilers – used frequently on ‘the Continent’ but a first for Bosch UK.

The new range will consist of four models (UNIVERSAL steam boilers: U-ND/U-HD, U-MB, U-LS and ZFR), each of which is suitable for liquid and gaseous fuels.

The question on every business owner/developer’s mind will be: what are the benefits of a steam boiler? – What makes a steam boiler preferable to the standard industrial boiler?

There are three main things:

Firstly, the steam boilers in the Bosch range are super compact – the large volume flame tube and the smoke tube bundle are compressed in a manner that keeps the system as condensed as possible. This makes Industrial Steam Boilers the perfect solution for smaller manufacturing businesses as well as processing companies and the service industry – any enterprise that demands small to medium volume requirements entreating a little savvy with regard to saving space.

Secondly, Industrial Steam Boilers offer efficiency on a large scale – reduction in consumption is tantamount to money saved, making steam boilers attractive to all industry, size irrelevant. The Industrial Steam Boilers in the Bosch range come equipped with flame/smoke tubes, which allows for a greater recovery of the heat contained in flue gases. This increases the energy efficiency of the boiler by seven per cent in dry running operation and up to fifteen per cent in condensing operations.

Linked to ‘efficiency’ is point number three: sustainability. Bosch’s Industrial Steam Boilers keep CO2 emissions low and thus contribute to a reduction in climate change. The modern burner systems comply with guidelines (in all countries) regarding the prevention and reduction of emissions. A completely neutral CO2 level can be achieved through the use of bio-oils or bio-gases.

Other pluses include:

  • Innovative boiler system technology, which features the likes of intuitive touchscreen controls that accommodate coherent operating logic and integrated protection functions.
  • And ‘system alliance’, which includes additional important components such as combined heat and power, heat pumps or solarthermics.

So; space, efficiency, sustainability and innovationbut the list does continue depending on the boiler in question – CLICK HERE to see further benefits and for a more detailed description on each of the four Industrial Steam Boiler models in the Bosch catalogue.

Plumbers champion water conservation in big business

Did you know that the UK is one of the least wasteful countries in the developed world when it comes to water use per capita? Only Denmark, Luxembourg and Czechoslovakia trump the UK in their efforts to save water.

America is the biggest culprit with regards to water waste, followed closely by Canada, Australia, Portugal and Italy.

Interestingly, most water usage isn’t at home; it’s in industry, commerce and agriculture – particularly farming.

If you are the manager or owner of an industrial plumbing system it is important to ensure that water is used in as economic and efficient a manner as possible – for both ethical and practical, money saving, reasons.

From a large scale industrial perspective one of the best ways to ensure minimum water waste is to check for leaks in the system, and then get them fixed. Post a hotline in bathrooms and kitchens to report leaks or water waste to facility managers or maintenance personnel. Also have maintenance personnel regularly check your facilities for leaks, drips and other water waste.

Another way to save water is to shut off water to unused areas of your facility in order to eliminate waste from leaks or unmonitored use. It is also a good idea to implement a water management plan for your facility, and then educate employees on good water habits through newsletters and posters.

A drop per second could waste up to 3000 gallons of water per year. And here’s another interesting little stat: for every leak fixed an average of 10,000 litres of water is saved per year – enough to fill over 300 baths.

Plumbers are at the forefront of the fight for safe, clean, drinking water for all. Offices and factories may not be aware that their water consumption is unnecessarily high, which is why it is important to ascertain a professional opinion and service when it comes to all things plumbing – most especially if it’s on an industrial scale.

Why it’s essential to maintain heating appliances

Did you read about the family that ended up with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty boiler at a farmhouse in Morriston, Swansea? – reported by bbc.co.uk on March 8, 2013.

An elderly couple and a 16-year-old boy were given oxygen therapy at the scene by fire crew personnel before the ambulance arrived to shift the victims off to hospital for proper evaluation. The three are okay but two cats that were present on the property died from gas inhalation.

A spokeswoman for the injured parties has revealed that the injured parties had previously reported sickness, now believed to have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Fire officer Alan Sherman, who attended the incident, said: “Faulty appliances can have extremely serious consequences as this incident shows.”

The moral of the story is to ENSURE THAT YOUR HEATING APPLIANCES ARE MAINTAINED!

The reported incident was domestic in nature but had the fault been with an extensive commercial or industrial boiler system – the kind used in hospitals, restaurants, police stations or hotels – the consequences would have been horribly severe. Rather than three people with carbon monoxide poisoning, there could have been hundreds… thousands even.

If you are the manager of a large heating system, make sure that boilers are maintained yearly; your local Commercial Boiler Service will do the job for you. And if you notice repeated incidences of unexplained illness or strange smells, do not hesitate to call the professionals. Rather safe than sorry!

New combi boiler by Worcester

There is nothing worse than trying to fit a giant boiler into a miniscule space – especially if you’re relying on aesthetic appeal to sell a product or service, like a restaurant or hotel.

Commercial or industrial heating systems also have the penchant for hogging space, and thus encroach on employees’ ability to work efficiently. There’s nothing like moving around a restaurant kitchen whilst playing ‘dodge the boiler’ as you fry a cordon bleu steak.

With this in mind, Worcester has expanded its Greenstar range with the launch of a brand spanking new combi boiler.

Described as one of the smallest boilers on the market, Worcester’s Greenstar CDi Compact measures 690mm x 390mm x 280mm, and is available in outputs of 28kW, 32kW and 36kW. The boiler’s compact size means that there is greater scope for where it can be fitted – in the cupboard, behind the door (out of site out of mind!).

Of course it’s all good and well having a lovely boiler that fits the practical/aesthetic dimensions of a business but the real question is whether it will save money – is it energy-efficient? Worcester says it is!

The combi boiler aims to be high performance with low emissions, and also features a revolutionary ultra-compact heat exchanger, manufactured using cutting-edge technology adopted from the aerospace industry and the military. Said exchanger uses less than 1W of electricity when in standby mode; although that may seem like not such a big deal, the savings will accumulate over time.
It is recommended that the boiler be serviced on a yearly basis (to keep it in good working order) and there is even an optional setting ‘service reminder’ that will help you to remember to call the experts when maintenance is due.

Worcester is currently offering a great deal on the Greenstar CDi Compact; if you buy it before June 2013, it comes with a 5 year guarantee. Bonus!

Vaillant 1 millionth boiler

To celebrate the installation of its one millionth ecoTEC high efficiency condensing boiler in the UK, Vaillant has awarded £2,000 worth of holiday vouchers to homeowner Barry Stevens, who had the Vaillant fitted in his property, and installer Adrian Rigden. The lucky winners were presented with their prize vouchers by Vaillant’s Brand Marketing Manager, Ian Johnson at Mr Steven’s home in Ramsgate.

The one millionth Vaillant boiler – an ecoTEC plus 831 high efficiency combination boiler – was also awarded ‘Best Buy’ by the leading Which? consumer publication in 2010. As every boiler has its own unique serial number, the location of the one millionth boiler was automatically identified when the customer registered his Vaillant guarantee.

Adrian Rigden, who installed the boiler, said: “I always fit Vaillant boilers. They are top quality, highly efficient products that are also extremely reliable. Once I had installed Barry’s boiler, it was simply a matter of explaining the controls to him and that was it – a straightforward installation, as I’ve come to expect from such a renowned manufacturer.”

Upon receiving his prize, a delighted Barry Stevens said: “I wasn’t expecting this at all, what a wonderful surprise. When Adrian recommended the Vaillant boiler, he explained that it would be simple to use and could reduce my heating bill – these holiday vouchers are an added bonus.”

Ian Johnson, Brand Marketing Manager at Vaillant, added: “As part of Vaillant’s continued commitment to its installer partners and customers, it is a pleasure to be able to congratulate and reward both Barry and Adrian with £1,000 of holiday vouchers each. Furthermore, the one millionth ecoTEC boiler will help Barry enjoy savings of over a third on his heating bills, while significantly reducing his carbon footprint.”
